It seems like a million years ago but GOP nominee Mitt Romney was roundly criticized just before the Olympics essentially for meddling into something not his business (but something he knew about): Olympic security. (I wish he’d criticized pro athletes in the Games but can’t have everything!) Practically run out of the UK on a rail, barely with his clothes left! Unpresidential!
So now what do we have: Something close to an admission that President Obama is a European socialist:
“We benefit when the EU is unified, speaking with a single voice, and focused on our shared interests around the world and in Europe,” Philip Gordon said during a visit to London, adding: “We want to see a strong British voice in that European Union. That is in the American interest.”
So what is “our shared interests around the world and in Europe”? Might be worth a petition to the White House to find out. The EU is an elitist attempt to establish a superstate without the consent of the governed. At least when we ratified the Constitution, we asked the leaders of the states to ratify it. There was an open debate and the anti-federalists nearly won. Thank the Lord they did win the Bill of Rights in the new document!
I contend that the establishment of a strong European superstate is NOT in our best interest. Why call for it? It has been American policy for years. I like what the Daily Mail said about it:
His unwelcome interference in this country’s internal affairs comes at a most sensitive time, considering that David Cameron is soon due to make a major speech on the subject — and is expected to say whether we are to be offered the in/out referendum that the majority of voters want.

The best course for the British national interest would be to get out altogether. But I fear that the Americans do not understand the sense of these arguments. Even if they grasp the cultural, linguistic and historical differences that separate rather than unite Europe, what business is it of theirs?
The arrogance and insensitivity of White House panjandrum Philip Gordon beggar belief. It is almost as if he, and others in the Obama administration, regard Britain as a colony which must defer to the demands of the imperial power.
However, we are not the Puerto Rico of the North Atlantic. And America should get its own house in order before lecturing the rest of us.
Remember the wise words of one on the ballot for President in your state and mine: “We just plain don’t mind our own business!” But we chose unwisely, both at the convention and in the general election.
